Founded in 1947, Steel Warehouse is a family-owned premier steel operator and service center with distribution, shipping, and processing capabilities providing slit coil, sheet, plate, and cold-rolling. Over the past 75 years and 3 generations, the family has grown to 500 members worldwide. In this engaging session, you will learn from Nathan Lerman, who serves as Vice President of Government Affairs for Lerman Enterprises. In conversation with Professor Gaia Marchisio, Nathan will walk through the history of the company, its evolution over time, his decision to join, and much more.

Nathan Lerman leads a variety of efforts for the organization, including structuring and financing the business’s expansion, and identifying opportunities to invest outside the core business. He lived in Sao Paulo while setting up a Brazilian manufacturing division, and has built particular expertise in economic development opportunities and tax credit financing transactions. Previously, Nathan had worked in banking and in politics, serving the Bush White House and the McCain 2008 campaign.

Gaia Marchisio

Professor Marchisio teaches Family Business Management and Managing Conflict in the Family Business for the Global Family Enterprise Program. She is a family-enterprise researcher, consultant, educator, speaker, and writer with over 25 years of impact across global family enterprises, academic institutions, corporations, public-sector organizations, and others. She not only advises on and researches family enterprise, but is a fourth-generation successor in her own family business.

Launched in 2016, the Brown Brothers Harriman Family Business Leadership Speaker Series at Columbia Business School welcomes global family business leaders to campus to share their unique perspectives and to interact with students and alumni.
